FOUL "MURDER CASTLE" - review on MUSIQUE MACHINE

“Murder Castle” offers up two lengthy slices of blackly roaring 'n' ripping storm-bound slices of HNW from this West Virginia based project that's all the work of J. Cadle(White Torture, ...Massacre & Oasis Of Fear).

This c60 tape has an untitled track per side, and the first sides track comes in just over the nineteen minute mark. The ‘wall’ rages straight in with a hit of deep ‘n’ roaring noise tone that’s seared by sudden grating train line like tones. After this initial high pitched and teeth gritting toned start the track settles down into a dense yet churning mixture of: circling storm roar, deep textural like scourings, and almost extreme industrial like textural churn. By the mid-way point you start to get hints of serrated ‘n’ slight higher pitched noise tones ‘n’ scrapes; which you can just make out ever so often in the ‘walls’ blacked maelstrom of sound. These higher pitched elements become more prevalent as the track nears it’s end, yet they never detract or take away from the deeply dense, bleak and churning wall dynamics of the track. All told it’s a wonderful intense and urgent slice of 'wall making ' that has some nice aggravated/ high pitched noise tones and extreme industrial veins running through it’s thick yet churning structure.

Over onto the second side and this track comes in just shy of the thirty minute mark.This ‘wall’ starts off a lot more simply and raging storm bound with Cadle unfolding this huge swirling ‘n’ roaring ‘wall’ of sound that’s pitch black and extremely dense. Though there is some slight storm like churn in evidence here, this ‘wall’ has none of the first sides higher pitchers and it tends to stay to more with roar ‘n’ battering tonalities, it’s also a lot more fixed and locked in it’s feel. The track brings to mind painful and draining walk through a endless raging nightime storm. Again this is another great slice of wall making, but in more of a fixed and blackly battering form.

So in summing two very consistent and worthwhile slices of black ‘n’ bleakly pitched wall-making from this great US project that has sadly been in hiatus of late. Lets hope there’s more new material soon from this and Mr Cadle’s other great projects.

FOUL "MURDER CASTLE" - review on UNLISTENABLE MUSIC

Harsh Noise Wall cassette from this antisocial noisemonger behind such awesome projects as WHITE TORTURE and ...MASSACRE. Low PE-style bass tone hides underneath the surface of cascading electronic noise that is constantly fighting with something that seems eerily melodic brimming beneath the surface. Has a steady sound to it that is the basic reliable thrill of solid static rushing wall like the finest work of FORCED ORGASM but with a personal touch unique to this artist. All of the releases on this label have a unique style to them and generally any release on it is worth checking out for HNW fix.

INFIRMARY "FOLLOW THE EDGES INWARD" - review on UNLISTENABLE MUSIC

Excellent tape from this constantly evolving American noise artist. This one is a Harsh Noise Wall-based release on a label that is mostly oriented to works of that genre, although this project has a variety of sonic facets. The recording on this one is a very high-quality room recording that gives a very powerful atmosphere of the live performance of this artist, which is also impressive. Black and white collage insert in the usual NARCOLEPSIA style with no side-text on the j-card and a small logo of a woman's foot in a high-heeled show. Very nice minimal layout on the cassettes that all have that unique NARCOLEPSIA feel to them. This one stands out from the pack because it is INFIRMARY and you can hear the quality of the distinct sounds captured onto this release. Intense HNW sound that stares into the void, like the central point facing upward on a rotating platform, spiralling a noise vortex into oblivion. On each of the three tracks on this cassette you can hear the sound of the amplifier, even as it turns off ending the recording. This is a nice touch that really takes you into the recording space with the artist and helps to put the sound deeper into our skull. Highly recommended pure noise from an artist with a strong commitment to quality and personal sonic growth, highly recommended as with other releases from this individual.

ROUGH SEX QUARTET "AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A SEDUCTRESS" - review on MUSIQUE MACHINE

Rough Sex Quartet are a mysterious, sleazy and disturbing northern England based HNW project that specialize in thick yet detailed psycho-sexual obsessed wall-making. “Autobiography of a Seductress” is a C90 tape that offers up two side long tracks of dense, sleazed and depraved HNW that’s dedicated to the pioneer American sexploitation and later on hardcore porn director Joseph W. Sarno who died early on this year.

On side A we have the first untitled track which starts with a brief sample of muffled looped sound and American male voice saying “I’d say rape is the only solution”. Then we’re pushed into this huge sounding wall of roasting ‘n’ rolling walled matter that’s built around: a grainy and muffled static press/dragging tone, a repetitive deep roaring ‘n’ roasting tone, and a deeply buried clamouring and barren simple percussive loop- these elements are circled and weaved together into a dense and unforgiving swamp of brutal sound for its forty five minutes running time. The 'walls' structure stays for the most part in recycling and repeating the sick and violent patterns in a dense mesh of unbreakable sound. The track has such a thick, nasty and sleazy edge to it- yet it’s also very complelling and moorish

Over onto side B and we of course have the second untitled track. This 'wall' rams straight in with brutal and punishing form- it’s centred around this very thick, deep and battering noise tone repetition that's the sonic equivalent of a barrage of rapid punches to the stomach. Underneath this central and relentless battering is: a buried stark billowing tone and possibley another battering layer of stark percussion( but as it’s so deeply buried I’m unsaw if it’s there or it’s my mind playing tricks on me!). This track feels even more violent and unrelenting in it’s attack than the first side, I think this is due to the main tone been so powerful, fixed and brutal in it’s stanch. Again there’s a really nasty and sleazed edge to the wall, and though it’s maybe not as moorish as the first side it more then makes up for it in brutal sonic torture and intense sustained 'wall' battering.

The track has a nasty sting in it’s tail, as at around the thirty six minute mark this grating and screaming sound loop appears from out of the wall- it sounds like an electronic goat abussed, and at first it rather freaks you out(as you’ve become so engrossed in the locked battering), but ultimately it really ends the track on a great bitter and unhinged note.

The tapes cover and inlays nicely enhance the tapes sleazed feeling with old black and white pictures of women sniffing drugs, two females toughing and a picture of what looks like a dug-up skull on top of a pile of books!.

“Autobiography of a Seductress” is a depraved & violent journey into sleazy 'walled' matter that runs with touches of locked extreme drone music and instrumental Power electronics elements. It's deeply nasty and sleazy, but somehow very appealing- much like Joseph W. Sarno movies I suspect!

TROUBLED SLEEP #1 - review on SPECIAL INTERESTS #4

Mikko Aspa´s review of TROUBLED SLEEP #1 to be found on the new issue of the always excellent SPECIAL INTERESTS magazine :

"60 pages A5 zine is put together in very old fashioned manner. Basic electronic typewriter font on white pieces of torn paper glued over various backgrounds. Very "punk" hand made feel. One long column with quite large size font fills the page. No reviews, no articles. It´s all about simple and to the point interviews with artists such as : Vomir, Fecalove, Baculum, Bachir Gemayel, Order of Nine Angels (not the organization but HNW artist who uses same name) Trash Ritual, Mental Funeral zine and photographer Tsurisaki Kiyotaka. If not looking at label / zine / artist, focus of the zine is quite narrowly relatively small harsh noise and wall noise projects. Common themes and hot topics of genre traditions are present. It is good reading, but perhaps limits the distribution channels of the zine into smallish circle where modern day HNW tapes circulate. I´d hope this would stay available and get distributed better since it deserves it."
